Project Description:

SA Five was awarded the prestigious opportunity to fabricate and install 5 walkway / pedestrian bridges for the 2023 Formula E season – the first time an FIA sanctioned ePrix event has been hosted on the African Continent, and more specifically, in our backyard – the Cape Town Waterfront district (around the Cape Town International Stadium).

This almost 3km street circuit required pedestrian bridges over the track to facilitate foot traffic from outside of the ear-marked city streets to inside the event precinct / spectator seating areas. It is believed that the track would be one of the fastest circuits on the E-calendar, with the all-new Gen3 cars racing at up to 320 kph. The event was successfully held on 25th February, 2023.

Special requirements for the design / engineering of the bridges is that 2 of the 5 bridges must be ‘double-width’ to accommodate the volume of spectators expected (and so allowing bi-directional traffic). The main bridge adjacent to the pit area (and another) were also to have wheelchair access – this was accomplished by the provision of external wheelchair lifts.

SA Five achieved this fast-tracked time critical project with sufficient time for the branding sub-contractor to complete their marketing shrouds. All the works needed to be executed in co-ordination with the City’s road closure programme, allowing the heavy lifts (towers, walkways and spans) to be executed safely around ordinary pedestrian and vehicular movements. HSE and structural inspections / certifications were carried out successfully (and independently) by the City Fire Chief and appointed Engineering Consultants respectively. All 5 bridges were dis-assembled and removed from site within 3 days directly after the event.
